Great question. The Crab Nebula is what’s left behind after a star exploded—a supernova that was actually seen from Earth back in the year 1054. So unlike the Horsehead (which is a dark cloud) or the Orion Nebula (where stars are forming), the Crab Nebula is the aftermath of a star’s death. At the center of it is a tiny, incredibly dense object called a neutron star, spinning rapidly and powering the whole nebula. So it’s basically: not a cloud waiting to form stars… but the remains of one that already lived and exploded.
