Matthew 20:1–16 The Last Will Be First, and the First Will Be Last My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Today’s Gospel presents us with the parable of the workers in the vineyard. Jesus tells us about a landowner who hires workers at different times of the day. Some begin early in the morning, others at midday, and some only near the end of the day. Yet when it is time to receive their wages, they all receive the same amount. Naturally, those who worked the whole day complain. They think, “We worked longer. We suffered under the heat. We deserve more.” And perhaps, if we are honest, we can understand their feelings. Sometimes we also think this way. We compare ourselves with others: “I have served God longer.” “I have sacrificed more.” “Why does that person receive the same blessing?” “Why does God forgive someone who came to Him only at the end?” But Jesus reminds us that God’s generosity is not measured by our human standards. The landowner asks, “Are you envious because I am generous?” This is the heart of the Gospel. First, God never stops calling us. The workers who came late were not useless. They were simply still waiting for someone to give them an opportunity. This reminds us that God never gives up on us. Some people discover God when they are young. Others return to Him after many years. Some experience conversion early in life, while others come back to the Lord after making many mistakes. God continues to say: “Come and work in my vineyard.” It is never too late to return to God. Perhaps someone has been away from prayer. Perhaps someone feels unworthy because of past mistakes. Perhaps someone thinks, “I have wasted too much of my life.” But the Gospel tells us: It is not too late. The Lord is still calling you. Second, we must not compare our journey with others. The workers who arrived first became unhappy because they compared themselves with those who came later. Comparison can destroy gratitude. We sometimes look at another person’s blessings and ask, “Why does he have more than me?” or “Why is she receiving something I don’t have?” But God’s love is not a competition. God does not love one of His children less because He has blessed another. Instead of asking, “Why did God give him that?” let us ask, “Lord, thank You for what You have given me.” Third, God’s grace is a gift, not a salary. The workers thought they were being paid according to what they deserved. But Jesus teaches us that the Kingdom of God is ultimately about grace. We cannot earn God’s love. We cannot say, “Lord, I have prayed enough, so You owe me a blessing.” We serve God not because we are negotiating a payment, but because we have already received His love. Our sacrifices and good works matter, but salvation remains God’s generous gift. That is why we must remain humble. Finally, Jesus tells us: “The last will be first, and the first will be last.” In God’s Kingdom, greatness is not measured by status, wealth, popularity, or how long we have served. What matters is how faithfully we have loved. A parent who sacrifices quietly for the family may be great in God’s eyes. A person who forgives instead of taking revenge may be great in God’s eyes. A sinner who humbly returns to God may become a beautiful witness of His mercy. Brothers and sisters, the Gospel invites us to stop counting what we think we deserve and start appreciating what God freely gives. Let us not be jealous of another person’s blessings. Let us not look down on those who came to faith later. Let us not think that our past failures have placed us beyond God’s mercy. Instead, let us rejoice because God is generous. Perhaps today God is asking each of us: “Are you willing to enter my vineyard?” It does not matter whether we came early or late. What matters is that we answer God’s call today. May we have grateful, generous, and humble hearts, so that when we see God’s goodness given to others, we will not complain, but rejoice. Amen. #Jesus
