Collectively we’d would rather sacrifice the higher thought put for the individual choice to walk up a bit quicker. Based on the results of the trial TFL have no desire to enforce any new rules to restrict the walkers.

Most escalators aren’t congested though- only in a few stations at peak times. If we did the ‘everyone stands on both sides’ all the time, it would slow down people in a hurry that need to walk up for no reason!

I actually work for London Undergorund and can tell you the reason we dont do it! our ingrained mentality of keeping right takes over unless there is a person/staff at the bottom constantly repeating please use both sides of the escalator. people do it for a minute but if just one gap opens up the crowd instantly reverts back to keeping right, cue the endless cycle of asking to use both sides etc. I can say with full confidence that every congested escalator would have to be permanently manned for it to work on crowd control as I have been said person standing at the bottom for a long time repeating please use both sides over and over and watching the cycle lol 😆 the congestion it would ease isnt bad enough to the point that the system needs to change just yet, but who knows if it might need to in the future!

I mean surely it’s almost like a hard shoulder in a way, it’s good to always have that accessible free flowing option up the escalators - if everyone has to stand then the ppl who are fast walkers or in a rush get out slower and hog up that space when they could’ve been out quicker, whereas the ppl who can’t do that are fine to take the method that suits them. This way both sides get the satisfaction of a way that works for them, while optimising for getting ppl out as best they can. Also it means yk if it is going slow, then ppl can even pop out and just start walking up

There’s actually been a peer reviewed statistics paper about this! It is indeed more efficient when people use both sides of the escalator, but only when the escalator is longer than a certain length! When it’s a shorter escalator it’s not as efficient

They scrapped it because everyone — EVERYONE — ignored it. It’s unenforceable. Also, it makes things more efficient but worse outcomes, the congestion is only for people that intend to stand, who (almost) by definition are not rushing. For people that are in a rush it’s much worse.

I went to Glasgow for holiday and they stand on the left and walk on the right when entering the subway... as a Londoner I got shouted at before knowing thats how it worked 😂

half as interesting recently did a video on this - it is faster at peak times to have both standing, but I'd gladly wait around longer if I'm standing to allow me to walk up when I'm in a rush
