Let me break it down. My opponent was a national champion from Kenya—just a small country in East Africa. He’d also fought in some commercial bouts in the Philippines before. He had some skills, but not a whole lot. On top of that, he hadn’t been training consistently for a long time, so his durability and everything else had dropped a lot. But physically, he was still a big guy—over 1.9m, dwarfed me, and weighed 79kg while I was around 182cm and 65kg at the time.At first, he didn’t want to wear a headguard; you could tell he was feeling pretty confident. In the end we both agreed to wear face-bar headgear and 10oz gloves—no hard feelings. Honestly though, if he hadn’t worn that headgear, he would’ve gotten knocked out cold, not just had a problem with his nasal cartilage and then started spraying blood everywhere.Long story short, he underestimated me. I had been preparing seriously for two months, otherwise, to be honest, it wouldn’t have been easy. This was really the result of getting back into training.
