Possibly add a small bit of wood? Like a square(or even a circle) piece that fits the telescope base perfectly gets screwed onto the tower where you want it

Screw in a small block of wood to the top wide enough to fit the circle. Sand down all edges for safety and stain to match. Then screw the telescope base to that pice of wood.
