Portugal has shown support to Palestine by refusing to cut funding to for UNRWA so I made ✨Pasteis de Nata✨ Portuguese custard tarts thanks to the recipe on allrecipes.com Dough: I cup flour 1/3 cup cold water (I ended up using more) Pinch of salt 1 stick of softened softened softened butter Mix together until a sticky dough forms, roll into a ball and cover with flour other wise it will stick to the plastic wrap. Let it rest for 10 mins then roll it out on a heavily floured surface. Butter 2/3 of the dough and fold the buttered side into the middle followed by the other half. I dusted the flour off as I went. Turned the rectangle, roll out and repeat two more times. Then roll it out once more, butter the entire rectangle and roll it into a log. I cut my log in half and refrigerated it for at least 2 hours.  In the meantime prepare the syrup: 3/4 Castor sugar 1/4 cup water  I cinnamon stick Peel of a lemon Add all ingredients to a pot and cook on medium heat without stirring until 215F. I don’t have a thermometer so I just let it bubble for a few mins until I thought it was ready 🤷‍♀️ then remove from heat Custard: 1/3 cup flour 1 and 1/2 cups milk Pinch of salt 6 eggs yolks Tsp of vanilla  Add flour, milk, salt to a pot and mix well. Then cook over medium heat whisking constantly until thickened. Let cool for ten mins then add in the egg yolks, syrup, and vanilla. Strain the custard to remove any lumps and the cinnamon stick and lemon peel.  Cut the dough log into pieces. I made 12 pastries in total. Place them into a lightly greased muffin and spread them up the sides of the cup until it goes past the top because it will shrink. Pour in the custard and bake in a 550F oven for 10-12 mins. Mine didn’t get the iconic charred tops but they were so so delicious. Sprinkle with cinnamon when serving.  #pasteisdenata
