I think it really depends on where you live in the Netherlands. Amsterdam had another culture (more individual) than most parts of the Netherlands.

I 100% agree. Living in the US now for 1,5 years and it’s mindblowing, especially here in LA everyone is so kind and positive. Even New yorkers were nice!!!

As a Canadian in the Netherlands I totally get it. I miss the smiles, the greetings, the small compliments from strangers, the discussions we have just because we want to connect with others for a moment. People call it fake but we know it’s just a small moments of connections in our community.

This is why I love going to America! I live in Belgium and we also never give compliments to strangers or talk to them. I feel like I can finally be myself when I'm in the US and just be nice to people

I was in America last year for the 1st time (I am Irish & live in NL), I have never been complimented so much in my life. I lovvvved it. 😅 Also, as someone who loves to talk & chit chat, I found it heaven. Everyone loves a little chat. 🥰

Also an American living in NL and the other day my 20 yo daughter called me (not just a text lol) because this group of girls her age stopped her on the street to say they loved her bag and she was so excited!! 🥰

I’ve been a lot to the US but the smalltalk and service in the beginning sounded friendly but after a while it became more shallow by the minute.

I'd rather people act nice than just say nice things to you. Tolerance towards other cultures or other people I personally find more important than people saying your outfit is nice.

I loved complimenting strangers in the NL because usually the response I got was very sweet and surprised! Like they hadn’t been complimented in a while either :’) My Dutch friend commented on how often I compliment strangers and said it was strange and refreshing.
