The Curious Case of Privacy at “Publicly Private” Dispensaries
So there’s this dispensary for weed, right? And some guy’s out front holding a camera, recording. People start coming outside, waving their arms like, “Hey, why are you recording us?”—because apparently, everyone wants to keep their visit to a weed dispensary top secret. Medical reasons, recreational reasons, “don’t want people knowing,” all that jazz. Nobody wants their face, their car, their license plate, anything captured for posterity.
But here’s the kicker: the dispensary has a big-ass sign on the building that screams, “HEY! THIS IS A DISPENSARY! BUY THIS HERE!” And people think they can stay anonymous? Come on. If you’re trying to be discreet but you plaster your business name across the building in neon, the whole world already knows what you’re doing. That’s like rolling up to a store that says, “Hey, we offer Trojan for molestation. Come on in, buy your stuff.” Or a massage parlor with a sign that reads, “Chinese Massage, Swedish Massage—yes, handjobs included.”
You see, when your car pulls up and everyone walking by already knows where you’re headed, the whole notion of privacy evaporates faster than THC in a hot dab rig. People can claim they want anonymity, but your advertising strategy kind of defeats that.
So next time someone gets mad at a person recording in a public space outside a dispensary, just remember: you asked for this with your signage. Want privacy? Tone down the neon. Want discretion? maybe don’t scream it from the roof. Until then, the cameras win, and the irony is delicious.
