@joshbeames: This phenomena isn’t actually an Aurora... meet.. STEVE 🥸 It’s a type of light that looks a bit like an aurora, but it’s created differently. Auroras, like the Northern Lights, happen when particles from the sun hit Earth’s magnetic field and make the gases in the atmosphere glow with colorful lights. STEVE, on the other hand, is caused by something else. It happens when really fast-moving, hot gas flows high up in the atmosphere. This creates a streak of purple and green light across the sky. Unlike auroras, STEVE isn’t made by the same kind of particles from the sun, so scientists are still trying to understand it fully. So, while STEVE might look like an aurora, it’s a separate phenomenon with its own special cause! PS: Comment GUIDE and I’ll send you my free Aurora Photography field guide so can nail the next one!
