as a native English speaker, rough was the first word that came to my mind as an antonym of soft in that context.

While I don't like your attitude, I can respect the quality and clarity of your explanations. I understand that this is your approach/character but I personally find it rather obnoxious. With that said, thank you for the educational content

this alleged difference between start and begin is complete nonsense. they mean exactly the same thing, only begin is marginally more formal

SOFT has multiple meanings in English and therefore has a variety of antonyms depending on the context in which soft is being used.

soft can both mean smooth in this context (regarding the texture) and pliable or yielding (regarding the physical consistency). words change meaning depending on context mate, you learn this in your pragmatics course

In fairness, just as most words don't have a single synonym, they usually don't have a single antonym either. It depends on context. The attached picture shows the antonyms thesaurus.com gives for "soft". Having said that, I'm not convinced that that method of teaching is helpful. It doesn't really explain what aspect of a blanket either word is describing. 🙈

"John then unlocked the front door and I started to follow him up the stairs" so we can't say "began following him"?

the antonym of soft (textural) is rough. in the clip, he is desribing a textural softness. ergo, he is correct.

I learnt to say “learnt”. I’m seeing more and more people spelling “leaned”. Are those words changing?

There are contextual antonyms, words that aren't usually opposites but act like them in a specific sentence. Like in the blanket example
