Ok!! I think it’s time to help educate those that don’t know too much about sturgeon, especially in British Columbia on the Fraser River. Hope this finds you well!
There seems to be a lot of misunderstanding from people in this comment section…..Fraser River sturgeon charters act as a vital “citizen science” research team for the Fraser River Sturgeon Conservation Society, with guides serving as field technicians who have scanned and tagged over 200,000 fish to provide essential data on population health and migratory patterns. This professional catch-and-release model turns anglers into advocates while funding the very resources they use; in British Columbia, 100% of freshwater fishing license revenue is reinvested into conservation. These “user-pay” fees, including mandatory conservation surcharges, have allowed the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation to invest over $230 million into 3,800+ provincial projects like wetland restoration and invasive species removal. Ultimately, the hunting and fishing community provides the primary financial backbone for provincial wildlife management, often covering over 100% of management budgets and ensuring the protection of these “living dinosaurs” without relying on massive government-funded research fleets. If you love wildlife in BC, then thank a hunter or a fisherman, because they are the primary funding for provincial wildlife conservation!
