@almostadison: I look at popular kids’ shows now, and we’re lucky if children with disabilities are represented in any way, shape, or form. Even the most popular shows like the Paw Patrol movies and episodes alike rarely include characters who reflect differently abled kids. Every day, and every episode that we don’t represent different abilities, cultures, ethnicities, and lived experiences, we quietly reinforce separation instead of belonging. My sister lives in Arizona, a state often recognized for its support systems for individuals with disabilities. And while there are many positives, they’re also implementing more specialized schools for differently abled children. There are pros and cons to this… in my opinion, there are two major cons that are not being addressed. First, the lack of exposure for typically developing kids. When children don’t grow up alongside peers with different abilities, they miss the chance to build understanding, empathy, inclusivity, and genuine connection. Second, it limits opportunities for disabled children to exist in real-life spaces where they are seen, included, and accepted for exactly who they are — not set apart, but truly part of the world around them. When kids don’t grow up alongside each other, we create a gap that carries into adulthood. Segregation isn’t the answer. And it starts with what we choose to watch, support, and normalize. So this is my gentle nudge to mainstream kids’ shows — and honestly, all of us — to DO BETTER. To show up for ALL kids, not just the ones who fit the “typical” mold. How can you help make a change in your own child’s life? The simple answer: find ways to expose your kids to people who are different from them. Give them opportunities to learn, connect, and grow. And second, reach out to your government representatives. Share your concerns and what you believe could be improved. You could be the start of that change…for your own child, and for someone else’s too. 🫶🏽 #DisabilityAwareness #SpecialNeedsParent #SpecialNeedsMom #Parenting #inclusion
