Jali Yankuba Saho was a renowned Gambian kora master, griot, composer and teacher. He was a member of the National Ensemble, performed with the legendary Ifangbondi band, and later formed the Manding Kelefa Band. He was known for his exceptional kora playing, compositions and for helping to promote Gambian music internationally. One of his greatest achievements was passing his knowledge of the kora to the next generation. He taught his children and many other Gambians and West Africans, helping to preserve the Mandinka griot tradition. His home became known as “Koraland,” where young people learned to play and even make the kora. Several of his children, including his son Jali Lamin Saho, continued his musical legacy. Jali Yankuba Saho had passed away by March 2010 though a reliable source confirming the exact year of his death has not been found at time of posting this.
