@sterling_voth: Audi once made an ad about clowns driving cars. The spot shows clowns causing chaos all over town, dropping balls into the street, driving blindfolded, and creating pure mayhem, while Audi drivers calmly avoid disaster with the brand’s safety tech in the background. The campaign was called “Clowns” and launched in 2017. What makes the ad great is not just that it is funny. It is that Audi found a way to demonstrate ADAS and driver-assistance features without making the work feel technical or dull. Instead of listing specs, they dramatized the problem. Even better, they used music to shift the tone. The film features a solemn reinterpretation of Stephen Sondheim’s “Send in the Clowns,” arranged by Faultline and performed by Lisa Hannigan. Audi also invited viewers to Shazam the track, and for every Shazam, donated to the road safety charity Brake. That combination is what made the ad work: Humor grabbed attention. Emotion gave it weight. The product benefit stayed clear the entire time. The result was an ad that felt lighthearted, but still grounded in a serious truth: the road is full of unpredictability, and safety matters. The industry noticed too. Audi’s “Clowns” went on to win major recognition, including the Grand Prix at the 2018 IPA Effectiveness Awards. The lesson is simple: Emotion sells better than a spec sheet ever could.
