@cgledhill: I like that the town of Gravesend have put up a monument for her. Historians would describe her story as “problematic” and certainly doesn’t sit well well viewed by modern standards. For good or for bad, the animated film made her famous. #historytok #pocahontas #exploring #grave #graveyard
Pocahontas wasn’t her real name, her name was Amonute Matoaka meaning “flower between two streams.” In the early 1600s Amonute was kidnapped when she was 15, her newborn baby was taken and her husband was k!lled. In England she fell pregnant due to grape and had a son.

Her son returned to America, and today her descendants are in the thousands, so in a way she did return home, she deserves to rest in peace. RIP Amanute. ♥️

If a woman - or person - is shipped to a foreign country after theirs was forcibly colonised, to marry a coloniser, you can be confident they had no actual choice and therefore were trafficked. She was only 17/18. She was not a woman making her own decisions, she was abducted and forced to survive any way she could, and in the process advocated for her people. "The truth is somewhere in the middle" doesn't apply when a person is for all intents and purposes a prisoner.

You make it sound like converting to Christianity is somehow evil. I think it’s a wonderful thing. I wish to happen more.

She was a young indigenous girl who was trafficked and abused by a colonial superpower. Don't sugar coat it.

I'm from VA. We grew up learning about her, even knowing relatives of hers. Some of which still used her name. From accounts she was indeed outgoing and tried to make the best of a terrible situation. She was held hostage on an English ship and very likely SAd, which is when John Rolfe may have intervened to prevent more abuse. The story is just that, a story, but the hostage part is indeed real.
