Licensed therapist here, my understanding is there can be bidirectional violence, but not bidirectional abuse. There can only be one abuser which is the one that has the need for power and control.

As someone who works in IPV im gonna push back a bit here. I think its important to recognize there are multiple models we can look at this through and the Duluth (power and control) is one model (and a good one). but it is not the only one and other models exist because we observe instances of dv where power/control isnt the base motivation. its important to look at instances like this through all available models and not just assume one is the "most right" because no lense is perfect. so its not fair to fully discount bidirectional abuse or just consider the man as the primary victim.
