@blackbirdcoop: Corporations and the government did not need to concoct a conspiracy to keep us from forming small farming communities. Small scale farming is its own special kind of hell, and the world we live in today is the result of hundreds of years of trying to figure out something better. Whether we succeeded or not is debatable, but you can’t debate the fact that most people wash out of farm work in under a month.

I only grow a handful of tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers each year and I’m sick of them by the end of August. The bugs, the weather, hand pulling weeds, etc. Love those first tomato sandwiches though 😂

there is a reason farmers had lots of kids. I grew up on a very small farm. Both my parents still had to work full time jobs to cover what we couldn't grow or raise ourselves

If life gets too hectic to maintain your hobby garden, then it dies and you can try again next spring when life has hopefully calmed down…now try that when your garden is your only means of eating

We romanticize growing all of our own food because it looks good on social media. I thought I wanted to do it, but I maxed out at vegetable garden, chickens, and honeybees. Now I’m down to just a veggie garden. I’ve learned that I like to eat local, but I don’t like to be the one responsible for producing absolutely everything. I’d rather support other local farmers.

every time someone finds out that my mom and I had a decent sized garden when I was growing up (50'x50'ish) they are surprised whenever I tell them that I will never do that again unless I have to lol. Too many cucumbers, squash, zucchini, tomatoes, corn and whatever else my mom decided on for the last one that year

everyone ive met in my adventures that failed at self sufficiency has said the same thing. "i thought this would be less work, not more work." what did you think would happen when you took machines out of the equation? chickens dont care that youve already worked 8 hours today.

we have a 40 x 60 veggie garden: 2 dozen tomato plants, a dozen pepper plants, 5 rows of corn, cucumbers, and green beans.... by end of July, that garden I've spent dozens of hours working on, is a burnt up, crispy, disgusting mess and I am TIRED of pulling weeds, tilling, watering, etc etc. and we get like, enough fresh produce to feed our family and freeze/can stuff for later. we generally have about a years of veggies preserved and ready to go. that comes at a cost: after working 40+ hours, I get to come home and spend 2 hours in the blistering heat weeding and tending the garden...

my parents are homesteaders and want to be self sufficient (they're retired ie old, so who knows how long that's gonna last) and let me tell you, they spend A TON of money at Costco 🤣

I'm in MN. While I truly love farming and providing my family with as much of our food as I can...there is zero chance I would want to be limited in choice to only the things that grow/can be raised in my locality!!

Fun fact. Self-sufficiency = massive time sink! Working yourself to death day in and day out just to lose it all when you can't contribute the time needed is no way to live IMO. Balance is the key. Working 60 plus hours just to live is bullshit.

I put my children in a program on a working farm. It took one weekend of assigned care to destroy any ideallic thoughts of homesteading.

My husband always dreams of living off grid & “growing our own food” and I’m like…dude, we grew up in the suburbs, in middle class America, maybe had a garden, but that’s it! We’re in our 50s, no effing way I want to live more than 45 minutes from civilization, with more than a hobby garden & fruit trees…like we do now. We have nearly 2 acres & we can barely manage it 😅 granted, we still both work full time jobs & we live in the desert so it takes a lot more effort, but still, no thanks! I’m not a 16th century peasant, I don’t want to live like one. And if civilization collapses, I won’t be here to try & survive it.

grew up on a small family farm with a dairy. I have nothing to do with it anymore. grateful for the work ethic but I knew I didnt want to work that hard every day and depend on the weather to be successful.
