Peaky Blinders gave us one of the most perfect and imperfect characters ever, Tommy Shelby became more than a character, he became a symbol, a role model, an inspiration… and of course this movie respects all of that perfectly. At the end of season 6, Tommy finds out he doesn’t have cancer and decides to isolate himself to come back stronger, but in the movie he’s suddenly broken, insane, living in a miserable hole, because apparently being a millionaire doesn’t matter anymore. We’re just forcing the downfall for no reason, and we’re not even told why he became this crazy. Then his bastard son is out there playing gangster while we’re told Tommy abandoned him, yeah sure, Tommy Shelby abandoning family, totally in character. Ada is literally begging him to come back and he refuses, but then a random woman shows up talking about giving him peace with some occult nonsense, ends up just sleeping with him, and suddenly he decides to come back. So all it took was that? Should’ve sent that earlier. Incredible depth. Then he comes back, we get a few cool scenes, the horse, the bar, you think okay here we go, the king is back… and then everything is rushed, no time to feel anything, no emotional weight. The nazi plot is basic, dumb, and completely empty. A villain with no depth, just “here’s money, let’s win the war with fake bills.” Wow. And the ending is just genius, Tommy dies to find peace, so basically you want peace, just die. Perfect message. He should have found peace while alive, but no let’s just kill him. And his son killing him? Amazing, no relationship, no history, no buildup, feels like a stranger. If they had built something over years, wars, struggles, okay maybe, but here it’s nothing. Arthur? Yeah let’s just completely destroy that bond, family clearly meant nothing. Ada talks about family then betrays it immediately and gets shot in the street like it’s nothing, beautiful writing. It really feels like they wanted to kill the whole family quickly just to move on to another series. All of this in two hours, impressive. Without Tommy Shelby this movie is absolute trash, he’s the only thing carrying it. They destroyed everything they built for years.
