Why not put in a nerite snail or something similar to keep the glass clean? I have 2 I'm my 30l and I've only wiped the glass once in 6 months!

Question, I know when setting up these sorts of aquariums you do all the normal stuff, let the water cycle for 6-8 weeks then test it. What am I looking for when I test it? A small amount of nitrates like a normal aquarium? Am I making sure there’s no ammonia?
