🇺🇸 January 23, 2023 — Seattle, Washington. 23-year-old Jaahnavi Kandula, a graduate student from India attending Northeastern University’s Seattle campus, was crossing a marked crosswalk at Dexter Avenue North and Thomas Street when she was struck and killed by a Seattle Police Department patrol vehicle. The patrol car was being driven by Officer Kevin Dave, who was responding to a reported drug overdose call. Investigations later found he was traveling approximately 74 mph in a 25 mph zone with emergency lights activated while his siren was reportedly only intermittently sounding. The impact threw Kandula more than 130 feet. She later died from her injuries. Bodycam and dashcam footage released during the investigation showed the extreme speed of the vehicle and indicated the officer braked only moments before the collision, leaving little time to avoid hitting the student. In February 2024, prosecutors announced they would not pursue criminal charges, stating they could not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the officer acted with conscious disregard for safety under Washington law. The case sparked international outrage after bodycam audio surfaced showing another officer, Daniel Auderer, making disturbing remarks about Kandula’s death. He was later fired for violating professionalism policies. In January 2025, Interim Seattle Police Chief Sue Rahr terminated Officer Kevin Dave after internal investigators concluded he violated multiple department safety policies during the fatal response.
