@pepper.steps: are you FOR or AGAINST geotagging? geotagging is a contentious issue that has sparked a fair share of debate over recent years, and i've generally avoided talking about it because i genuinely don't know what the "right" answer is. DO NOT COME FOR ME I'M JUST THE MESSENGER AND PLS KEEP THE CONVERSATION CIVIL I LOVE U #geotagging #Outdoors #outdooraccessibility
People don't actively care about leaving no trace and it's upsetting

if anything it's good that outdoor exploration has exploded. seems like people are trying to get away from technology and trying to get into nature. I don't think it's hard to learn how to leave no trace, and while I can respect not wanting to post locations, idk why people have to get so bitter over seeing posts

Gatekeep is for people who hold on to things that feel precious to them. Like a childhood teddy. Sharing is how others get into the awesome things life has to offer that they happen to stumble by. Not sharing = no outdoor people. Regardless of the mess 10% of the trashy people leave behind, there are 90% of outdoor people to help sustain the trails and places they like. In short, we do more good than harm by allowing others to enjoy nature. Sharing is caring. ❤️

People confuse not advertising a place with not allowing someone access. I am never going to tell someone only I can go somewhere and they can’t. I am just not going to advertise a place, and let them do their own research. People who are motivated to do their own research are more likely to take care of the place.

During the pandemic, one of my favorite tiny nature preserves near me was shut down due to litter/parking in prohibited areas/swimming. it got popular overnight and couldn't handle the constant traffic. It was a gorgeous one of a kind place, but the non-prof organization who owned it had ENOUGH. I remember being very upset, but also glad they were able to close it down so it could heal. after 5 years it opened back up and people treat it with respect now! ❤️

I agree that these places can handle the visitation if good practices are followed. I just don't think you can count on visitors to follow those good practices. It's good to educate so that hopefully one day it is possible though

I remember the screaming sessions when Yellowstone proposed closing roads to everything exception busses to try to downsize the amount of litter being left. Probably not the best strategy, but the public does need to work on how they behave in the outdoors.

I am happy to share locations that are easily accessible with some research. I’m more tight-lipped about spots that are hard to reach, require technical skills, are sensitive areas, etc etc
