Put some metal mesh over the hole on top. It'll keep leaves, other debris, and critters out of your barrel. Just keep it clear/brush it off as needed.

I had a rain barrel but it wasn’t practical. No water pressure so can’t use a hose. Only good for filling buckets. Can’t water a garden with a bucket.

I was looking into this but saw that due to the way roofing shingles are made its not wise to collect and repurpose the runoff from gutters because of the chemicals that can leech into the water
