Because of all Girl Scouts taught me, I will buy a box of cookies from any girl who asks me. But she has to ask me, and I will not speak to an adult about the transaction. It makes me so proud and filled with joy when those interactions happen, but it’s normally only 1 or 2 a season and that bums me out. Maybe this is my sign to get involved with a local troop…

Right!! It doesn’t have to be multiplication, they can just add the boxes….. it doesn’t have to be 6X2 It could be 6+6 you get the same freaking answer

I think you hit on something so very important. Lots of parents seem to have forgotten that teaching is a part of parenting. Whether that’s reinforcing what’s being learned at school or taking these moments to teach what YOU know to empower your child. It is not solely the teachers in a child’s life’s responsibility to teach.

At that age, the leader should be printing a card with the cost of multiple boxes “2 boxes = $12 etc. “

One of the booth sheets that got turned into me this season from a 1st grader, her first year selling, the mom had written the amounts across the top to meet the child where they were at math wise. Where we're at, they are $6 a box. So the mom wrote 1 box = $6, 2 boxes = $12 and so on and so forth. The Daisy scout can count and match numbers and I thought this was a good way to teach her multiplication even if she hasn't learned it in school yet.

Yeah, those comments were weird, because isn’t the point of selling cookies to learn how to count, how to communicate etc? Also, it’s ok for parents to teach their children ahead of a school syllabus. It’s ok to give them a head start

They could literally just add it, too! I was a Girl Scout for years & I'm fully on your side. People seem to be forgetting that most of their job is to prepare their children for adulthood by giving them the skills they need to thrive.

They should be able add 6+ 6 + 6 etc. at that age. They have a tactile resource to hand over as they add their 6s so they don’t lose track. Girl Scout cookies are supposed to teach real skills. I went to summer camp every year from my cookie sales. That’s goal setting, delayed rewards, work ethic, sales strategy. Like you said, if these kids don’t have to do anything then they aren’t learning anything. That’s just a mini MLM.

You’re not wrong. Knowing the names of the cookies and having a list of pricing ( 1 box = $6, 2 = $12, etc.) is not unreasonable for first and second graders. It should be the expectation that if you’re selling something you know about the product.

The whole point of Girl Scout cookie sales back when I was one (25 years ago ish) was to have the ground work for business later on. If they’re unable to do these minor things- then what’s the point of even selling the cookies?!? (Just echoing your thoughts as a Girl Scout to then MBA) 😅

What’s the point of having your daughter GS if not for her to learn skills, grow confidence and independence. As a parent your job is to help your child grow not just physically, but emotionally, intellectually and socially.

As a former girl scout, the company has two different versions of the cookies from two different companies. Trefoil is the same as the shortbread and it's sweeter. Samoa are caramel delights but is more coconut based. They've been doing for years. at least since I was a girl scout in the 1900s

You don’t need to know multiplication to know what 9x6 is. You can also add 9+9+9+9+9+9 which would give you the same answer and single and double digit addition is absolutely something I learned in first grade

I’m sooo on your side and I’m sooo sorry you had to make this video. Bots notwithstanding I believe that “skill haven’t learned yet” thing is lame. It’s called experiential learning or when you get older “on the job training”…skills that sometimes cannot be taught in school and most times includes some type of emotional or societal intelligence. It builds critical thinking skills in real world situations.

This is how it feels being a teacher. A teacher will say "they need to practice xyz", and the parents come back yelling. Also, they can just add! They don't need to multiply!

Parents are the child’s FIRST teacher. My daughter was a GS in 1st grade through 10th. Her Troop did the work. We the cookie moms were there to support.

I’m raising my daughter in France and she’s 4. School starts here at 3, so she’s already in her second year. She can read simple words, and do simple addition. In Canada she’d be in JK and not have learned it yet. I’m not saying this to brag, but to illustrate that kids rise and fall to the expectations given to them.
