@mordretisafraud: i LOVE shadow slave and it's the first webnovel i've read but now that I've been caught up for a while and reading other things I'm realizing a lot of writing flaws ss has. for one, G3's diction is very limited to the point where you hear jokes in the community about hearing "harrowing" "insidious" "ivory" etc every single chapter. And beyond that he just takes a very tell dont show approach to a lot of fights and enviornments. People say that the writing in the new chapters is worse, and although i don't agree with that, the fights in specific have definitely gotten worse since vol 9. It's not really G3's fault since everybody just got SO strong but it's gotten to the point where memories and echoes dont reallt matter much in fights anymore and now it's just a competition of "will" which i think is kinda a bs fighting mechanic in itself. i might go as far as to say that aspects themselves don't play that big of a role in fights at the moment. Things just got very large scale very quickly which was jarring for many after vol 7. Another thing I think G3 couldve done better is his characters lowkey. Some of them are good like sunny, cassie (kinda), and jet, but others like kai and effie are too shallow to hold a main character position. Kai's character is boiled down to "im super nice and have an overplayed gimmick with sunny!" and effie is "i make s-x jokes and am very strong!" i appreciate him trying to give more development to effie during mirror city but "im a mother now" isnt really enough. In general he nevee develops his side characters and it's kind of frustrating sometimes, especially when he expects us to care when he kills them off. This is gonna be controversial but i did not care whatsoever when the antartica cohort died. You could make the argument that their death was more for sunnys development then emotional impact on the reader but just in general shadow slave has become the stranger things of webnovels. "Ok guys let's introduce a new character every arc, not develop them whatsoever, and then kill them. what? kill ANY of the main cast members? why would we do that??" no but fr im kinda disappointed that the main cohort has all been alive since the beginning. i would have liked to see one of them die during the first or second nightmare to add some more stakes to it (side note but the book had NO stakes for all of vol 10 which kinda pmo). When it comes to nephis im conflicted. I know her character has more depth than the others but to be honest it's just kinda...boring? at least since the memory wipe. They put sunnys whole dymanic with her on hold since v7 and ever since then shes kinda just been there not providing very much except that romace they got into, which i also dislike. God G3 romance is something man they act like middle schoolers as 27 year old adults. I know that there's kind of a reason for that with them not experiencing anything romantic or emotional like that in the past so its kinda new territory but it just seems like a let down of a sideplot after volume 8 (i lowkey loved the slice of life stuff with them before that though). Antagonists is another thing that SS really should do better with because Anvil and Ki song are good characters but the way he handled them was kind of disappointing to me. we only really got to know them through flashbacks of other people and got no POV's, not many conversations, and just in general a lack of input FROM them which was sad with the amount of time he spent hyping them up. I'm liking asterion but i fear he's going to suffer the same writing fate as them. "lets only give him cool one liners and barely any real dialouge!!!" i hope they do give HIM more screentime and im sure they will, but im just nervous because of how he did song and anvil. right now he's ironically more of a concept than a person because most of what we've seen from him are just his thralls. anyway hooolyyy essay #shadowslave #sunless #webnovel #fyp #xybca
