LO MEJOR QUE PUDO HACER HAVERTZ… ¡DEJARLA PASAR! 😮💨 MARTIN ØDEGAARD, CAPITÁN 🫡 #PremierLeagueDAZN⚽🏴 #Chelsea #Arsenal
I didn’t realize until after my husband died how much the person I had been my entire life would influence the way I grieved him. As the eldest daughter, I had spent years being fiercely independent, highly functional, perfectionistic and accustomed to being the person who could handle things, figure them out and take care of everyone else, and when my husband died, all of those tendencies came right into grief with me. I tried to grieve perfectly because I wanted answers, a plan and some sort of roadmap for how to get through something that was inherently messy and uncertain. I royally sucked at asking for help because I had spent my entire life being the person other people relied on, and suddenly being the one who needed support felt foreign and uncomfortable. I people-pleased into my own discomfort because even in the middle of the most devastating experience of my life, I was still worried about upsetting other people, and I rarely gave myself permission to completely fall apart because I was convinced I needed to keep everything around me from falling apart too. And because I was highly functional through so much of it, people often assumed I was doing much better than I actually was, when the truth was that my ability to take care of my kids, make decisions, answer emails and keep moving said very little about the amount of pain I was carrying while I did it. We talk so much about what grief does to a person, but not nearly enough about what we bring into grief with us. Our personality traits, coping mechanisms, childhood roles, strengths, weaknesses and lifelong patterns don’t disappear when someone we love dies, and sometimes grief turns the volume up on all of them.
