The History of Sumo Wrestling Sumo (相撲, sumō) is a Japanese style of wrestling and Japan's national sport and oldest sport. It originated in ancient times as a performance to entertain the Shinto deities. Sumo wrestling, began as a sacred Shinto ritual performed to honor the gods and ensure good harvests. Over time, it evolved into a martial contest under imperial and samurai patronage, eventually becoming a structured sport with rules, rankings, and ceremonial traditions. Rituals such as salt purification and stomping (shiko) preserved its spiritual roots, while the establishment of professional wrestlers marked its transformation into a national pastime. During the Edo period (1603–1867), sumo took its modern form. Matches were organized to raise funds for shrines, temples, and bridges, making professional wrestlers central figures in society. Once reserved for the elite, the sport spread among the masses, especially in Edo (Tokyo), Osaka, and Kyoto. Its popularity was fueled by colorful woodblock prints depicting wrestlers and dramatic bouts. Despite frequent government bans due to disputes and disorder, sumo thrived, cementing its place as Japan’s national sport and cultural treasure. #sumo #wrestling #japan #History #LearnOnTikTok
