A thermometer is important for checking temperature, but your chicks' behavior is often the best real-time indicator of whether the heat lamp needs to be raised or lowered. If the lamp is too low (too hot): Chicks may avoid the light, spread along the edges of the brooder, or form a ring just outside of the warmest area. If the lamp is too high (too cold): Chicks will crowd tightly together under the heat source and may hesitate to move away to eat or drink. If the lamp is just right: Chicks move freely around the brooder. Some will rest under the warmth, while others explore cooler areas comfortably.
