To them, coffee didn't taste like comfort; it tasted like "charred wood" and medicine. They had no childhood memory of the flavor.  Nestlé hired marketing psychologist Clotaire Rapaille, who gave them radical advice: Stop trying to sell to the adults.  Nestlé pulled back on instant coffee advertising and flooded the market with coffee-flavored candy. The kids loved it. It was sweet, milky, and cheap.  For 10 years, Nestlé waited. They allowed an entire generation to grow up associating the flavor of "coffee" with sweetness and rewards. When that generation became adults and entered the workforce... Nestlé brought the coffee back. This time, it was a massive hit. The flavor was familiar. The "imprint" was set. The Business Lesson: You cannot force a culture to want your product. But if you are patient enough, you can build the desire from the ground up.
