Mica Miller’s story has stayed with me for reasons that are deeply personal. And while authorities concluded that Mica’s death was self-inflicted, her story also brought national attention to something much larger: what can happen to women while they are trying to leave controlling or abusive marriages. That’s part of why I talk so much about divorced former tradwives learning how to make a living. Because for many of these women, rebuilding after divorce isn’t simply: Get a job. Make a budget. Find a new house. Move forward. Some are simultaneously dealing with harassment, stalking, threats, smear campaigns, litigation, financial instability, or an ex who continues creating chaos long after the relationship ends. And somehow, in the middle of all of that, they’re supposed to figure out how to support themselves—sometimes after spending decades outside the traditional workforce. That’s why this community exists. It’s why I talk about giving yourself a job. It’s why I talk about rebuilding financial independence. It’s why I talk about creating work around the life you actually have. And it’s why I want women coming out of these relationships to know that other women understand how complicated rebuilding can be. Mica Miller’s story has put an enormous spotlight on experiences that many women are navigating much more quietly every day.
