people who refuse to thrift "fast fashion" are just accelerating its journey to the landfill. Some of my wardrobe staples are thrifted Wild Fable (a Target brand). If you buy it second hand, keep it, and wear it, then it is no longer "fast" fashion.

there's a reason the original sustainability slogans like "reduce, reuse, recycle" and "use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without" don't talk about where to buy new products - the most sustainable choice you can make is to continue using what you have & get every ounce of value & use out of it! once you *have* to get something new, that's the time to find a sustainable product from a reputable company! also so many of the companies are greenwashing their products so these people might not even be getting a better or more sustainable product anyway

as someone who works at a thrift store i try to tell people this and they are not more sustainable for donating all their old clothes and thrifting for new ones all the time is basically just as bad for the planet as buying fast fashion and then donating after a few wears. the majority of both donations will end up in the landfill anyway. 75% of thrift store donations will end up in the landfill before it hits the floor.

I saw a video of a girl using the rubber band from her asparagus to keep her yoga mat rolled saying you don’t always need the new thing. The top comment was “but I needddddd a yoga mat holder”

When looking solely at environmental impact, yes. But this take ignores the other half of the issue, which is labor conditions. The main reason I avoid fast fashion is the knowledge that garments cannot be produced that cheaply without labor exploitation. There is literally slavery in the garment industry, and many workers work in very unsafe environments. ‘Sustainable’ fashion brand usually are also more transparent about the factories they use and their working conditions. When presented with the dichotomy of buying one fast fashion item and keeping it forever, or buying 5 ‘sustainable’ items and disposing of them quickly, the first option is probably better for the environment, but the second one decreases human suffering the most.

Honestly when I had to go back to the office after Covid I had gained a bunch of weight and could only afford shein tops. I still have them all and wear them regularly to work.

I try to use things until they’re so broken I can’t fix them anymore. I don’t always of course no one is perfect. But I’ve been working really hard to let go of a disposable mindset wherever possible.

yesss I call this "fast slow" fashion - it's fast fashion, but lasts a long time so you dont need to rebuy. Like I go to music festivals every summer and instead of buying new outfits every year or for every festival I buy cotton and linen pieces from target or old navy and then wear them for multiple years in a row/wear them to multiple festivals. not only are they super comfortable, but they hold up very well and the only person who remembers your outfits is you so it's not like it (having a new outfit for every event) matters anyway! 😂🥰
