@slaywithak: I’d rather her think they are still alive than to have to grieve them over again ❤️ #fyp #dementia #dementiaawareness #nurse #nurses

I have a resident who thinks I’m his wife I hold his hand and we talk about the kids and how they’ve grown I just hope someone does the same for my babies when I’m not here too

My grandpa passed at 92 with dementia back in 2013. The Alzheimer’s unit refused to lie. He’d ask several times a day where his wife was. Grandma died years prior. He cried every time—multiple times a day!! I always told him that she went shopping (she loved shopping). He’d settle right down. Why make someone grieve over & over? 🥺

I had a resident who couldn’t settle until they’d “made a call” never told me who they wanted to call, no family, so I rang my mum and they had a lovely 20 minute conversation with my mum. They settled for the rest of the day afterwards ☺️

THIS is the perfect example of not only empathy, but a person who is in the field the right reasons an not just a pay check.

in 2017 before her illness took her, I went to the beach with my grandma and grandpa. She was sure I was her bestie and we were there to have a party so I let her have it and in exchange she gave me the best gift no one could ever give me without knowing. We were literally gossiping sitting on the sand and she had a look at my grandpa who she did not recognize, but she instantly fell in love "with that beautiful young man over there". In the next 5h the relationship would progress in her memory and she'd come back to tell me how their first date went , how he asked her to marry him.. I got to watch my grandma fall in love with my grandpa and relive their whole story all over again in one day and it's my most precious memory

I had a resident who was persistent on calling her husband (he had passed away) so I let her use the phone on the unit to call my cell phone. She’d always say “Oh this man must still be working late, I’ll try again later” ❤️sometimes it’s the little things that meant the most.

I used to call my 96 year old patient's parents before bed so that they knew he was safe. It's the only way he would go to sleep. His parents passed decades ago but he forgot. It's easier if we enter their world instead of expecting they enter ours.

Memory care providers deserve to be paid so much more purely for the compassion in their hearts. You’re amazing.

Thank you for meeting them in their world, and not making them relive it over and over. This is the way to be with dementia patients 😭💕

I had a resident who was a nurse 40+ years and would get agitated/combative trying to take over cart & nurses station. I made her a badge, gave her clipboard and had her as my "trainee" worked wonders!! thank you for taking the time and thought to promote their quality of life 💜

😭 may both sides of your pillow always be cool, you always get green lights on your roads, and may you always have what you need in your fridge and pantry when you're making any recipe forever.

I used to be a carer, I had a lady with dementia who called me Mary, she was so excited to see 'mary' every day. I don't know who Mary was, but I loved being her and seeing her smile when she saw me and shouted 'MARY HI!'

you're the daughter she can tell, even if you're not hers. her daughter still hears the message, and no doubt looks out for you, because you care for her mama
