I was disappointed by how minor the Grace never volunteered to go to space plot twist was. In the book it was so shocking to learn

I feel like they really glossed over Rocky not being a water based lifeform and how big of a deal that was for Grace. Also, they super sped up the breeding of the Nitrogen resistant cure. Really loved the movie overall though.

"On Earth, we have a scary, deadly creature called a spider. You look like one of those. Just so you know." Rocky proudly replies, "Good. Proud. I am scary space monster. You are leaky space blob."

For me, the biggest disappointment of book vs movie was how the flashbacks were handled. The book really places the emphasis on how Grace is regaining pieces of his memory and how that affects his mission and sense of self. Movie felt like two parallel narratives unfolding at once. Great adaptation, tho.

personally, the one thing I really really wish the movie included was grace accepting that to save rocky at the end, he would have to die. the movie makes it seems like his decision is go home to earth or save rocky and go with him to erid, since the food issue in the book is never touched upon. I think its a pretty huge difference considering how intensely afraid of death we learn he is, and really undermines the bravery he learned to show and the whole finding someone to be brave for message

Considering they had to condense a 16 hour book into a 2.5 hour movie I think they did an incredible job.

it felt like Grace's smarts were glossed over, hes literally a genius and it's what helps him overcome situations

1. It’s NOT a coincidence that he’s qualified and coma resistant. Stratt tells Ryland that she kept him on the project because he has that gene and he was the unofficial third science specialist all along. She made sure he was part of all major decisions related to the project.

My only downer is how rushed the start of the film is. Grace immediately wakes up, goes up the hatch and realises he’s in space which made it seem like he had some idea of what was going on. In the book he’s not even allowed out of the hatch until he remembers his name.

One change I was upset to see was not including stratt using a memory loss drug on Grace to ensure his compliance when he woke up. Also I loved the stratt Karaoke it made her more human which made it all the worse when she “betrayed” grace

#1 difference. The movie grace randomly stumbles on great solutions. Book grace experiments and researches to find solutions.

Also… Rocky describes his eating as gross and private in the book but “beautiful” in the movie.

There’s a line i just reread in the book where stratt was like “Do you think I would’ve had you in every training if you weren’t coma resistant? You were always the backup” and it makes him feel so used and negates her seeing him as a friend and that was soo potent to me

also Ryland is the one who named Astrophage!! in the book Stratt asks him what to call it since he was the one to interact w it first (that’s also a thing in the book between him and rocky where he explains that on earth if you discover something you get to name it) but he thinks about latin root words and is like i guess Astro … phage? bc it’s space algae? but in the movie it’s already been named when he’s told about it

I think the biggest thing that the movie misses is something a lot of people might think is small, and that is that Grace actually learns Eridian, to the point he doesn’t need a translator, this is why he is able to teach on Erid, there is essentially zero bars to communication between him and the young Eridians

Carl is not in the book but Steve is. Steve was the cool security agent that did help Grace with the build of the Venus box.
