@therapistinrecovery: Anyone else miss being ignorant sometimes or is that just me??? What helps you give yourself grace when self awareness doessnt equal willingness/ability to change?? #selfawareness #changeisgood #therapytiktok #therapisttok #mentalhealthawarenes
I have an extensive knowledge of certain areas of mental health, specifically what I suffer from. I'm running into the problem when I go to professionals I know as much if not more than they do and I still struggle. Nore often than not they don't have anything to suggest that I haven't tried. EMDR is next.

Yes! Where is the desire to make the change? Or is it just avoidance? Obviously somethings are easier to change than others. But man- so frustrating sometimes!

It took 5 years to fully understand that I was changing. Every time I was aware I moved a little bit closer to my goal of changing. I couldn’t see it the first few years and it was soooo frustrating and I felt so broken. But looking back at my journey I’ve made huge changes in my behavior, but it took consistency to fully see the changes

Absolutely true. As a person with an advanced degree who’s always been able to overcome obstacles with studying/learning, it was rough to discover how progress in therapy is slow and nonlinear.

I’m a therapist I agree I see that all the time I caught the awareness trap. Also, what happens to people tend to get hypocritical of themselves will get frustrated and then drop by the therapy. That’s the trap part. The upside to that I tell people is you can’t get to that very frustrating place that you’re talking about unless you’ve been doing the work so well it’s frustrating. It’s also a sign of progress, but this is the first video that I’ve seen and I watched these all the time that’s ever touched on that bravo

I could see that. I’m very very self aware and I am stuck on/ obsessed with finding answers and understanding and writing down goals and trying to practice the thing that will help make me better but I often times fall short. I am much better at thinking about my life rather than doing the things I think about. I’m trying but man it’s hard

I definitely had a wave of grief when I started to become self aware. when I fully started understanding how much trauma has affected my life and personhood. the restent that I didnt ask for this trauma and the overwhelm of how much I needed to unlearn.

IFS and somatic therapy have been really helpful to work with the conflict between what your SELF knows and behavior which is hard to change. It taught me to have empathy for the parts that don’t want to change.

My realization was that a TON of people aren’t aware and that’s a bit isolating. And yeah I know why I suck but am too lazy to stop sucking. That too 😭😮💨😮💨

the change requires deep work. it is rewriting behaviors we created sooooo long ago. it is ongoing.

in my opinion, its not true. self awareness and change go hand in hand. self awareness, true self awareness, takes a long time to develop.
its like, if I asked you to talk about your relationship with your father, how many times would you have to describe it before you could really, really describe it. probably more than you think.

Yeah, I see this all the time as a therapist. My clients think self-awareness, or better yet, “understanding why I’m like that” is the goal. And no matter how much understanding they develop, there’s almost always resistance to change. I use ACT a lot, and there’s a lot of merit to how that model cultivates willingness. I usually begin with their actual level of willingness and set behavioral goals from there while helping clients reconcile (often with a little help from IFS) why they would resist change even when they “know better.” I often frame it as “some change is better than no change, so if you want to exercise, and you’re willing to do right now is walk around the block, start there.” There’s then a parallel convo about the pace of change and why it’s hard to do so, which helps reset their expectations. But I think I may start front-loading that expectation setting more.

Timing of this video is impeccable- I was literally just thinking to myself about this topic. Been in therapy for a bit and know stuff but not much has changed.

Living in a society that conditions us to abandon ourselves for the comfort and needs of others and rely solely on external validation and approval keeps us mistrusting ourselves and returning to safety - no matter how unhealthy or toxic our ‘safe’ environment is. Overriding our deep, rigid brain pathways is awkward, uncomfortable, messy, and isolating. Healing takes a lot of bravery, patience, grace, and daring. It’s worth it and our soul knows.✨

I’ve learned over time that changing patterns of what I’ve been doing did not mean I was going to feel good about it as I have slowly stopped over functioning. I don’t necessarily feel better or happier. If anything I feel a lot of guilt right now and a lot of resentment. A lot of projecting my internal thoughts about my worth now that I do far less for people than I normally do, but I also think that may be part of the process and I am hopeful that because the change is being so painful it might also mean that it’ll stick at the end.
