@balancedmindsedu: Taking recess away feels logical. Work isn’t done. Attach a consequence. Teach responsibility. But here’s what we know: The students losing recess are often the most dysregulated. And movement regulates. Outdoor play lowers stress hormones. It boosts dopamine. It improves executive functioning and attention. So when we remove recess to increase productivity… We often get the opposite. Accountability matters. Expectations matter. But regulation comes first. A regulated brain learns. A stressed brain defends. And let’s be honest— If someone took your planning or your lunch to “teach you responsibility”… Would that inspire growth? Or resentment? Recess isn’t extra. It’s essential. Protect the reset. What’s your school’s policy on recess and unfinished work? 👇 Let’s talk. #RecessMatters #TraumaInformedTeaching #TeacherReflection #RegulationFirst #BalancedMinds

Planning period and recess isnt the same. I have to work during my planning. It isn't a break. And principals take them away, but not for punishment.

Students need to learn that you can’t get play time until you finish your work… recess shouldn’t be a necessity it should be a reward… there is no such thing in the teachers schedule where she just gets a moment to go play… actually she’s grading papers after she leaves her “work” and btw often principals and parents ask teachers to working into their schedules so they can have meetings

We don’t take away recess either! I teach kindergarten, we stop and teach the skill right there in the class. If they can’t sit on the carpet, we practice doing that. If they can’t do math or science they don’t Miss recess, we teach them, same with behaviors. They may miss centers to practice something but never recess!!

Funny. I wrote an entire book about a planned approach blending physical and academic based not only on formal studies but my own experience. Idk why I bothered to do that…

There is no such thing as a reset in life… you can’t compare taking recession like taking lunch kids get lunch no one takes lunch but we are raising students

My principal doesn’t have to take my planning time because I get my work done because when I was younger there were consequences.

Let me share this with you: the student had recess during class. They comprehend the concept of Time Wasted/Time Owed. If the student exhibits avoidance behavior, this strategy works for me. They also understand accountability. For my students, it only takes once. Afterward, I can have a private conversation with them, giving them options on when they want to complete the assignment. I check in with the student and ask what I can do to help them succeed. Then, I remind them that they don’t have to do it right away, but they will have to do it during recess. However, they will complete it today. I then reiterate the options: now or during recess, but it will be done today. It works wonders, now you have a student completing assignments.

I don’t take their recess, but I do give laps. That way they still get movement in, but can’t play the whole time.

My kid acted a fool at school and I asked the school to take away his recess. Haven’t had a problem since. So yes, yes it works.
