The Hutts are or were probably the most stable and consistent entity in the galaxy for many millennia, If legends is to be believed. The Hutts have existed through the Rise and fall of 2 republics and the fall of a 3rd, the rise and fall of 2 Empires, The return and Fall of the sith order like 1 or 2 different jedi orders numerous galatic wars civil wars and cold wars all the while the Hutts were just there for about 15,000 years. thats longer than human civilisation irl

Hutt space is not officially part of the Empire, just like it was not part of the Republic. They are a separate collective of worlds.

I am dying for someone to talk about the Bureau of Ships and Services (BOSS) because it's basically a bureaucratic cartel that is so completely apolitical it just keeps going through every government. Old Republic, Empire, New Republic, First Order, Final Order, Hutts, Hapes, whatever, they just register ships and keep the space lanes working.

I remember using the Hutts as am excuse as to why Qui Gon didn't just steal Shmee and Anakin from Greedo saying he could complain and they would use it as an excuse to get concessions from the Republic in is weakened state. Not the strongest arguement I know but as a serial Devil's Advocate it's all I could think of lol

I’ve also been playing SW Outlaws recently and let me say it does not deserve even half the shit it gets. It’s such a fun game. I’m not saying it’s the best game you’ll ever play, but to have a Star Wars game where you’re not on a quest to save the galaxy or a righteous Jedi goody goody it’s so refreshing. Just playing as a nobody in the galaxy trying to balance the various syndicates and play them against each other it’s so fun!!

The Hutt cartels also didn't specialize. They provided a supply for whatever there was demand. For example, in legends it's heavily implied that Owen Lars' farm was one of the last independent holdouts of moisture farmers. The Hutts essentially controlled Tattioine's water supply through intermediaries. Unlike the Pykes, who specialized in spice or Czerka who specialized in weapons.
