@theuglytruthofdivorce: Let’s clear something up that WAY too many parenting plans get wrong… If you choose to travel for work or pleasure and your kids are not with you… You forfeit your parenting time. No swaps. No “I’ll take them next weekend.” No “I need my days back.” You chose to leave. We are NOT about to start rearranging the entire parenting schedule 50 times a year because one parent keeps choosing trips without their kids. And let’s be honest… Why should the other parent lose their time just because you made plans without your children? That’s not fair. That’s not stable. And that’s exactly how schedules turn into chaos. Parenting plans should create structure… not constant negotiation. If you leave your kids— you lose that time. Period. These are the kinds of details most parenting plans completely miss… and they matter more than you think. Know better. Do better. #parentingplan #custodyrules #highconflictdivorce #coparentingproblems #divorcetips
I have to disagree. My work schedules my trips and they are mandatory. I don’t know when they’ll occur until they are scheduled. It happens 3-4 times per year. I ask for swaps and what days he wants to swap for. I can’t lose my job as I’m the sole provider. There is no reason why parents can’t work this out so the kids have the time they want with each parent. Two people who loved each other and their kids should be able to compromise for one another from time to time. I would absolutely do it in return and have.

Or just be a good coparent and work together. Things come up. Things happen. Life is about adjusting to change and compromise.

I used to be accommodating toward his schedule and I can tell you this much... he didn't deserve it and I regret letting it happen. There was always an alterior motive that I wasn't aware of until afterward. Don't do it.

See the problem is my husband is in the military and he’s told when he has to go someplace.

I’m happy to accommodate and happy my coparent does the same. It’s so healthy for our kids and us too. 🥰

Fully agree. While, in theory, “swapping time” sounds fair - it’s frequent reshuffling for the kids!

As opposed to what? For example: my ex husband is going for a month to Turkey, of course he forfeits the time with our kid. I’m not gonna keep dropping her off at his house every Wednesday while he is in turkey. How would it *not* be forfeited. He’s not there. What’s the alternative I’m missing ?

Isn’t that almost the same as ROFR? Or would I need to specifically add this in the order too?

I also would have to disagree. I have a great relationship with my ex and if he needs to go, of course I’ll take my son and he can see him before he leaves or after he gets home and I don’t mind. What ever is better for my son is what we choose to do. Same goes for me. If I have to leave I’ll ask if I can have him a night before I leave and he’s always willing to be flexible. I am thankful !

Yepppppp!!!!!!!!! You have meetings on those days all of a sudden and want to reschedule child time? No. And I'm not giving up my time because you're going on a cruise for a week.

what if they constantly plan things during their parenting time that makes them not have the kids? or things conveniently come up on their days?

I’ve done it and I’m not the parent that does it. But if we switch weekends or days…it’s the same amount of time. I don’t get less and he doesn’t get more, it only matters if there are major trips or events scheduled and my son needs to go with me, like out of town to see his sisters. I’m flexible but I also would like him to be flexible if need be.

Disagree. That custody paperwork is what you use when you don’t agree. Whatever the parents agree on are what they agree on.

Agree with this. I flexed for years for my ex and it’s a nightmare. I have to flex my schedule to accommodate him AND THEN change it again when he decides he wants the days back. Constant cancelled plans. Constant stress. I’m all for being friendly but it gets to be too much. Listen to her!!!

I disagree I travel a few times a year with work and have no control over that. It’s my job, i’m not taking a different job because I am the breadwinner. I support him and pay child support so if I want to change when I’m seeing my children because I am supporting them, we have 50-50 and I’m sorry that sometimes that falls on the time when I take a work trip if I take a personal trip, I always make sure it does not interfere with my children and when I have them!

It would be reasonable to state that things have to be coordinated by a certain time in advance (like 30 days), or even that the schedule modifications should be limited to no more than x times per year, but to say that parents deserve to lose time with their children permanently for having to go on mandatory work trips?

That’s why I opted out of right of first refusal. My previous job required me to travel every few months and I would not want to give up my time to him or worry about messing up my daughters schedule every time. Luckily, I was able to schedule it when she was with him 90% of the time. But if it was during my time, I now had the right for my daughter to stay with one of her grandparents.

Can it state that re arrangement is optional? My work is twice a year for 3 days and it enables me to provide for my daughter. Her father asks to split every weekend instead of every other weekend so any plan is interfered with. The child’s schedule alternating every week so it is harder to create stability during the week regardless …
