Stratt was ALWAYS going to send Grace. He wasn’t part of the plan. He WAS the plan. The karaoke scene shows it. She sings the words, “Remember everything will be alright. (Nods at Grace) We can meet again somewhere. (Looks down 😞) Somewhere far away from here.” And that’s the last thing she sings, she walks away. She was telling him right there in that moment.

I love when Grace leaves karaoke and goes outside and finds Stratt accidentally. They’re talking and he said he doesn’t want to bother her and she says, “you don’t bother me.” Not “you’re not bothering me.” I think that was just a lovely way of her telling him that she likes him. As a person.

i keep seeing criticism from book readers that things weren’t included, but as someone who didn’t read the book, i already picked up on most of those from just the “show don’t tell” aspect of the film. it’s so well-made and doesn’t need every line of dialogue from the book to convey these things!

Also! When Strat asks Grace to go on the ship, Grace says he'll thing sbout it and Strst tells him he has 3 hours. But at the end of the movie when Rocky asks Grace to stay and Grace says he'll think about it, Rock tells Grace to think about it a long time. I think this is one of the best parts of the movie.

One thing that I loved is that Grace had that yellow jacket in the flashbacks that was the same exact color as the astronauts jumpsuits, so even when he wasn’t an astronaut yet in the flashbacks he was still matching/part of the team that would be aboard the Hail Mary

I also think the diverse soundtrack is a nod to the voyager golden record. The gold plaques on Hail Mary are based on the pioneer plaques/the voyager record.

Another thing that I found amazing was when Grace was trying to run away from Rocky's ship at the beginning, the three little bursts forward that Rocky did just IMMEDIATELY lets the viewers know that the aliens are friendly. It's such a human thing in the hands of the aliens, it's like crouching in Minecraft

The scene with the voyager plaques on the walls because because it’s a one way trip and they expected the Hail Mary to become a ghost ship that will act as essentially another voyager floating through space telling the story of humanity
