Glad to hear youre going back to Lamotrek. You should work with universities to see if you can get a grant to document the canoe build. $25k is very little in the grant world, and your background is in education.

Anyone interested in this, there’s a really cool documentary about a young Pacific Islander girl who does something similar. She finds ancient canoes built by her ancestors hidden behind a waterfall, and goes on a solo voyage across the Pacific.

This might classify as experimental archaeology which could lead to funding! Try to contact universities with research projects on ancient pacific maritime cultures/ migration routes. Nine months might be enough time to start a project (if materials and techniques align with what is believed to be ancient methods). Good luck!
