I wouldn’t say it’s a myth because some states you don’t have to turn off the engine. First time my auntie did it I was like WTF. I thought immediate blow but no. No smoking for sure. No sparks or nothing like that.

The biggest mistake is getting back in and out of the car due to risk of static electricity causing a spark when you grab the pump handle
