TOP 10 Workouts we would NOT recommend as an orthopedic surgeon. Prepping for surgery is our New Jersey sports medicine and orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Mike Shindle, who routinely repairs shoulders and knees every with through minimally invasive surgical techniches, which he learned training alongside some of the best surgeons and medical institutions in the country, including the top orthopedic hospital in the country, Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York City. Because many of the injuries we treat start out in the gym, here’s 10 workouts we would avoid as orthopedic surgeons, coming in typically after-the-fact, when the mosts severe, unrepairable damage has already been done. This list is by no means cumulative, and we always support meaningful convo’s through positive comments and feedback! 1. Behind-the-neck shoulder press This position forces the shoulder into extreme rotation. We see labral tears and rotator cuff injuries from this movement. 2. Behind-the-neck lat pulldowns. Same joint position. Same problem. High stress on the rotator cuff and shoulder capsule. 3. Heavy barbell back squats with poor control. Large compressive force hits the knees and lumbar spine. Form breakdown turns this lift into a knee and disc injury risk. 4. Upright rows This move narrows the space inside the shoulder joint. It commonly triggers shoulder impingement. 5. Weighted sit-ups and decline crunches Repeated spinal flexion loads the lumbar discs. Disc herniations often follow this pattern. 6.Leg extensions with heavy weight This isolates the knee joint and creates high shear force across the ACL and patellar tendon. 7. Smith machine squats The fixed bar path forces the body into unnatural mechanics. That stress often shifts to the knees and lower back. 8. Max-effort deadlifts with poor formRounded spine plus heavy load equals high risk for lumbar disc injury. 9. Box jumps when fatigued Fatigue ruins landing mechanics. ACL tears and Achilles ruptures often happen here. 10. Kipping pull-ups Explosive swinging creates huge shoulder traction forces. We see labral tears and biceps tendon injuries tied to this movement. We are not anti-gym. We train every week. We just protect the joints we repair in the operating room. Train hard. Train smart. Protect your shoulders, knees, and spine. Like, Comment & Share!
