@itadakihealthy: I couldn’t believe that they put fish sp*rm into sweets….😅 💚 Hi, I’m vegan nutritionist itadakihealthy, living in Tokyo for 11+ years 💚 How to be vegan in Japan? 👉🏻Grab your copy of “The Ultimate Vegan Guide for Japan!” 142 pages packed with vegan info (last updated March 14th, 2026) 💚 OR just book a vegan shopping tour with me! 😍 👉🏻 All links in bio In principle, most wagashi should be plant-based, but modern versions often contain animal-derived ingredients, as the focus is on preservation and a longer shelf life for convenience. ‼️ Always check the label for the following: 👉🏻 Cochineal / Carmine (コチニール / カルミン / 赤色102号・赤色3号) 👉🏻 Fish extract (かつお / カツオ / 鰹節) 👉🏻 Dairy (乳成分) 👉🏻 Eggs (卵 / たまご) 👉🏻 Honey (蜂蜜 / はちみつ) 👉🏻 Fish sperm (白子 / しらこ) ❗️ If you're buying fresh wagashi at a food stall, it's best to ask the staff directly. Mitarashi dango, for example, sometimes contains katsuo dashi (bonito stock) in the glaze. ❗️ As a general rule, I avoid pink-colored wagashi, as they often contain cochineal (crushed beetles). However, some wagashi are colored using kuchinashi (クチナシ), a plant-based dye derived from gardenia fruit that is vegan-friendly. 🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱 #vegan #veganinjapan #vegantravel #japanesesweets
