@_jennasayquoi: Centuries of goth massively condensed. Pls see my video on strawberry hill & Horace Walpole! #victoriangoth #victoriangothic #victorianaesthetic #victorian #gothaesthetic
Goths sacked Rome>”gothic” became synonym for “barbaric”>when Renaissance architecture became popular, the previous medieval style was looked down on as “gothic”>Gothic architecture became cool again during the Gothic Revival, along with a nostalgia for all things medieval>one of the leaders of the Gothic Revival architectural movement, Horace Walpole, wrote a book that became (what is often regarded as) the first Gothic novel>the dark, melodramatic, supernatural, nostalgic themes of gothic lit and its film adaptations became associated with a particular post-punk music scene>which then developed into the modern goth subculture

As an old school goth it was always about vampires and romance kind of a rejection against punk but still loving alternative music

I feel like modern “goth” looks like the architecture; so possibly just the vibe?

I may be able to shed some light on this subject. Coming from a former Emo/Goth, again, it has to do with class systems. We did not want to be associated with the popular group, so we went as dramatic& experimented with different styles; (hence the dark esthetic), which came about in the late 80’s early 90’s.

It’s a trending aesthetic on the tiktok topics for creators list anyway, I’m sure wuthering heights had a lot to do with the resurgence!

Modern Goth is actually taking from Hammer Films. An english film studio that made monster movies set in the victorian era.

I think modern Goth was trying to dress like the gargoyles on the buildings. I mean, I was dressing like it and obsessed with dragons and everything dark.

I suspect it also had to do with Queen Victoria and her 40 year mourning period, the strict mourning rituals, and the post-mortem photography. Oh and Dracula and the New England Vampire Scare.
I would also hypothesize that the dark aesthetic of Gothic also has something to do with the bubonic plague happening at the same time. I'm sure that the universal level of loss and mourning affected the style of the populace.
