Benin City had weakened way before the British came along. This was due to internal power struggles, succession disputes, and external pressures from other empires and Kingdoms in the region. The British burnt it to the ground easily because of this. Also, their main trade was ivory, so thank god it saw its fall. The government's of Nigeria are to blame for not caring for the ruins also. Look at the Coleseum in Rome....the ruin is well looked after.
