in the book rocky chooses the material though sound conduction its actually a coincidence it was clear because rocky doesn't see so he doesn't realise Grace can

he doesn't intentionally scare Grace. Rocky doesn't know that Grace can't see him except through that particular panel. Rocky doesn't know about sight yet.
