@christian.autism.adhd: If your autistic or ADHD child refuses to do breathing exercises during a meltdown… there’s a brain reason for that. During a meltdown, the nervous system is in fight-or-flight. The brain shifts control to the amygdala (the survival center) and the thinking part of the brain — the prefrontal cortex — goes offline. That’s the part responsible for things like: • following directions • reasoning • calming strategies like breathing So when we say, “take a deep breath,” their brain may literally not have access to that skill in the moment. This is why regulation often has to happen before or after the meltdown, not in the middle of it. During the meltdown, what helps most is: • reducing stimulation • giving space • staying calm and steady Once their nervous system comes back down, then those coping tools become accessible again. Understanding the brain behind behavior changes everything. #autismparenting #adhdparenting #neurodivergentkids #nervoussystem #meltdowns
