ten hag did this vs city all the way back in 2024 during the fa cup final because of it city were stuck in there own half for large periods of the game and couldn't play through the middle and were forced out wide but since utd were so compact in a 4-2-4 city struggled and scored from a goal keeping error to lose the game

This for formation it is easy to dismantled... Play ball to the right cb(when the L.w presses then) then the right winger & right back stretches the pitch, then the very same long ball that's hit by the goal keeper should then be played by a L.B into the right back then they have more men in attack(quick transition)
