The requests involved Tinubu and three other individuals. The FBI and DEA initially refused to confirm or deny whether the requested records existed, a response known as a Glomar response. However, in April 2025, Judge Beryl Howell ruled that the FBI and DEA's responses were improper and ordered them lifted, saying the agencies had not provided enough evidence to justify keeping secret whether Tinubu had been a subject of a criminal investigation. The latest FBI request comes after the US Department of Justice sought additional time to respond to the court over the records. The DOJ requested 10 more days, but the judge granted only four, until August 21. Tinubu's legal team also sought the extension, but the request was reportedly declined. The FBI said that if granted permission, it would submit its confidential explanation before August 28.
