My biopsych teacher spoke about Carl Hart in our class exactly about this point. Very interesting!

As an experienced user of many, I find your videos informative. Destigmatizing them is very important, because not everyone who uses is an addict.

So well said. It’s not necessary or safe to discuss illegal activities. You are a respected published researcher. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

"I've never danced, but I've watched people dance before. Let me be the objective truth on the theory of dance."
I feel like a lot of medical fields are currently like this. Those that have firsthand experience definitely have different views on it than what's outwardly observed from the lense of a person who's never had that experience.

I honestly do not think it’s dangerous to publicly admit to past drug use. Most politicians have scandals far worse, I doubt it would have any real consequences to talk about that online (perhaps this is a case of your anxiety being loud). Im also going to guess you haven’t tried many drugs, maybe due to anxiety, family hx of addiction, or due to having so much scientific knowledge of them. As a mental health worker and an addict, I personally believe that a person understands addiction better if they’ve experienced it- even more than someone who only studies addiction but hasn’t experienced it. I also believe this about other mental illnesses. In general in life, having direct experience of something gives you far more info than simply reading or studying the concept. This is the difference between knowledge and wisdom. Wisdom is a more direct knowing. I can read about Paris, France and learn everything there is to know about it. Not the same as going there and experiencing it.

I have a family history of schizophrenia too! there are many things I have not tried because I'm on SSRI's, and the risk of serotonin syndrome is not worth it to me

from my personal experience taking the drugs youre learning about doesnt always make you learn more about them but rather make you understand the things said about them more

Both emic and etic viewpoints are necessary, and data of all sorts is necessary to back those viewpoints up. We need both people who take drugs and people who study drug use to talk about it!

The key here is a scientific understanding vs an experiential understanding - because you are only here to provide a scientific understanding that doesn’t inherently require you to have imbibed, which as you point out can in fact adversely effect your ability to be scientifically objective. Thank you so much for what you do and provide here 🩷
