where i live, our crosswalk buttons don't affect the traffic lights themselves, but the light saying you can walk won't turn on unless the button has been pushed

The traffic light one may not control the traffic lights but it does alert the walk sign to update when the traffic lights change. I have performed my own study and each time I did not press the button the walk sign would not change even though the lights changed. although that may just be at that specific light.

I dont buy the crosswalk button one, in my city u always have to press it if u wanna cross, because most crosswalks, if u dont press it, it will never turn green when its supposed to, it will stay red until u actually press it

That’s a very broad over simplification, and in some cases flat out wrong, I’m an electrician who’s built a lot of offices, there’s no such thing as a fake thermostat, if they want to put one in you can’t control it will just have no buttons

Every single elevator I've been on here in South Africa has working close buttons. It's a whole 1-2 seconds faster than just waiting.
