A quick disclaimer: this video is referring to safe friendships between people who are healing. Having CPTSD does not automatically make someone a safe person. There can absolutely be downsides too. Two people with CPTSD may trigger each other’s fears, struggle with trust, pull away when overwhelmed, become overly responsible for each other’s emotions or unintentionally reinforce unhealthy patterns. But when both people are self-aware and doing the work… there can also be something incredibly healing about being understood without having to explain yourself. Someone who recognizes your symptoms and doesn’t make you feel broken for the ways trauma shows up in your life. Many of us developed CPTSD in unsafe relationships. Part of healing is experiencing safe relationships that teach your nervous system a different reality... that connection can be consistent, respectful and safe instead of something you have to survive.
